How to: Write a Post-Interview Thank You Note
So, your interview went well, and you want to leave one more lasting impression for the company. What to do next? Send a thank you note. Not only does it show your continued interest in the role and allows you to stand out against other candidates, but it has the potential to influence your prospective employer’s decision (if done correctly). Here are our 5 tips for a well-written thank you note.
Keep the letter short and sweet – it doesn’t have to be a whole page. In fact, 3-4 sentences are enough to get your point across.
If you interviewed with multiple people, make sure to write individual notes to each one of them. It comes across as though you put more effort into the process and will be appreciated by the individuals.
Start by addressing the interviewer. If you spoke about a personal connection in the interview, make sure to include that. For example, if you went to the same school, grew up in the same area, or have a mutual friend, say, “It was so nice connecting with you, especially since we [insert commonality here].”
In 1-2 sentences, reiterate why you would be a good fit for the role. It helps to include a concrete example. For instance, if the role includes writing copy for social media, include a previous experience where you did that or something similar.
Finally, finish the letter with something that leaves the ball in their court. For example, say that you are either looking forward to hearing from them or are looking forward to next steps (depending where in the interview process you are). This shows that you are actively awaiting news regarding the role.
Overall, thank notes are a great way to leave one last impression on your interviewer (or interviewers.) If done correctly, you will be one step closer to landing the role!
