Meet the Team: Sarah Mapes

Tell us a little about your background!

A large part of my professional background was working at Harvard Kennedy School for the director of its Center for Business and Government and former University President. While at Harvard, I earned a Master’s degree in International Relations, building on my B.S. in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire.

I currently live in New Hampshire and commute to Boston for my amazing job at Roessel Joy!

What is your role?

I am the Vice President of Operations at Roessel Joy. My day-to-day is everything that is behind the scenes of recruiting.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love that I have a great degree of control and autonomy within my role and my career. Being a part of a bigger vision to change the status quo in a traditionally male dominated industry is a good reason to head to work each day.

Why do you like working at Roessel Joy?

I love our culture – “work hard, play hard” sure, but it’s more than that. We don’t have a traditionally rigid hierarchy, we reward and promote based on accomplishments and merit rather than tenure and regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation. For a small company, we have a diverse team and I love what everyone brings to the table to encourage and motivate and teach their colleagues.

What values drive and motivate you?

I am driven by a sense of accomplishment. I love working on something - taking time to think through the different courses of action, move through the process, and then finally get to check that off the ever growing to do list. That feeling when all your hard work paid off and you see the finished product in front of you, that is a major motivator.

What is your favorite piece of career advice?

To keep learning. Learn from those around you – their mistakes and successes. Learn from your own errors (and don’t do them again!). Don’t be afraid to be wrong, it’s usually a learning opportunity.

What is one thing we should know about you that we can’t find on LinkedIn?

In my free time you’ll find me on a beach with a good book, on a hiking trail with my camera, or in a new country with a glass of wine.
